That's a great cake idea; I never thought of doing something like that. I think a similar design (although not necessarily Lala-themed) might be in order for our upcoming bakery. I'm glad you managed to make such a nice cake despite some of the iffy tips you were given. First off, it actually is advised to let the buttercream crumb coating dry all the way. But when it's time to apply the fondant, you want to use a thin layer of piping gel to make it adhere to the cake. You can also spray the cake with a very fine mist of water, but the gel is preferred. And although it isn't necessarily a bad idea, I would suggest only using cornstarch and not powdered sugar. Powdered sugar is only going to add to what is already a very sweet topping and it can also mess with the consistency if you accidentally use too much. Cornstarch can dry out the fondant, so using shortening on your hands was a good idea. Once the fondant is on and smoothed out, it's a good idea to spray the cake with a light mist of high proof vodka. That will get rid of any powder residue and it evaporates very quickly so there's no risk of getting the kids drunk. Heh.
Anyway, it looks like you pretty much got it figured out on your own and you did a good job. I would've been thrilled if my mom had ever put in the effort to make me cool cakes like that when I was a kid.

Ha ha, it annoys the heck out of my wife, and especially her parents. If they say something like "Put on a coat so you don't catch a cold!" they can expect to hear a "Well, actually..." coming from me. I have always loved learning and I enjoy sharing knowledge whenever I can, even though some people prefer to not hear it for some reason. I'll never understand how people can be more content with being misinformed ("Ignorance is bliss" simply doesn't make sense to me!).
And because I have had an incredibly hard time finding employment the last few years, I've kept myself busy by experiencing as many different things as I can stand. Baking is one thing I've always enjoyed, though, even as a child. It's one of the few activities my wife and I both really enjoy, which is why we're trying to open a bakery right now. As soon as we have free time, we're going to meet with a city planner to get more information about what we need. In the meantime, we're working on our menu and trying to perfect some of our favorite recipes. Our latest treat has been the praline truffle, something I came up with by accident back when we were dating. If I can just tone down the sweetness a little and find a better cocoa powder (the one we have is too bitter), they will be perfect. I want to work on my persimmon pomegranate cookies next, but the fruits won't be in season until autumn. Hmm, maybe we can work on the honey bear brownies...
