Red Cross goes 'Lalaloopsy' for blood donor

In a world loopy for Lalaloopsy, the Red Cross is hoping the mega-popular dolls can entice more donors to give blood during the holiday season.
The American Red Cross Blood Services Northeastern Pennsylvania Region is offering people who donate blood during December, when inventories typically decline, a chance to win one of two Mittens Fluff 'N' Stuff Lalaloopsy dolls.
For those out of the loop, the Lalaloopsy line of "Sew Magical" rag dolls with button eyes are this year's must-have toy for little girls.
The blue-haired Mittens Fluff 'N' Stuff is especially popular and hard to find, with one blogger dubbing her this year's Tickle Me Elmo.
Red Cross spokesman Shannon Ludwig said while the Lalaloopsy promotion and others planned this month are all in good fun, there is a serious purpose - to get people who don't donate regularly or who may be first-time donors through the door during a time when blood donations traditionally drop off.
"We've had people who come out for promotions and then they found the donation experience was not as painful or as scary as they envisioned," Mr. Ludwig said. "So we have gotten regular donors because of that."
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Region needs 351 people to donate daily to meet the blood needs of the 29 area hospitals it serves. Each unit of blood can save up to three lives, Mr. Ludwig said.
The Red Cross will give away one Lalaloopsy doll on Dec. 21 to someone who donates through Wednesday. The second will be given Jan. 6 to a donor who gives between Thursday and Dec. 31.
Mr. Ludwig said December donors also have a chance to win a 42-inch television, a Blu-ray disc player or a Global Positioning System unit. There will also be daily winners of a $25 Visa gift card.
